  • Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School! As we gather together to celebrate this special holiday, we are reminded of the many blessings we have received throughout the year. Thanksgiving is a time for reflection, gratitude, and fellowship, where we come together as a community to express our appreciation for God, Jesus, family, friends, and the opportunities we share. We encourage everyone to take a moment to acknowledge the goodness in their lives, to cherish the relationships that enrich our days, and to extend kindness to those in need. May this Thanksgiving be filled with warmth, joy, and an abundance of love as we honor the spirit of gratitude that binds us all. We invite you to join us as we collectively give thanks and celebrate the gifts of life and faith.

November 15th, 2024 This week at ELS I saw preschoolers with huge smiles enjoying the octopus see-saw, listening intentionally during story time, and having a little snack time.  Kindergarteners were actively playing during PE with Uncle Malik.  I love seeing students run with ear to ear grins.  1st graders learned about the compass rose and the phrase “never eat soggy waffles”.  2nd graders took a field trip to compliment their most recent water unit in Science.  3rd graders are getting better with their Ukuleles.  I stopped in 4th grade this week for a little discussion about active listening.  5th graders continued reading The Westing Game and a certain 5th grader reached an AR Milestone.  She will be recognized at chapel next Wednesday.  6th graders showed off their band skills for Mrs. Rolf.  7th graders were learning about the properties of heat and how heat is transferred.  8th graders learned how to write equations for algebraic functions.  The week just seemed to fly by and we are already half way through November. November 8th, 2024 This week at ELS I was able to help out at Pre+ this week and see some preschoolers work on art projects.  The theme was Thanksgiving.  In Kindergarten I saw some centers work with Handwriting practice.  They are really getting good at writing their names.  In 1st grade students used mirrors and pictures to see what their mouths should look like while making sounds.  Did you know that you cannot make that “ng” sound while plugging your nose?  How many of you just tried it?  HA!  2nd graders worked on subtracting from 13.  3rd graders are on a field trip to the Ocean Center as I write this letter.  7th and 8th grade also had a chance to go to the west side and learn about native snails that are very rare and help plant life.  6th graders were adding and subtracting with mixed numbers.  Those problems always require a lot of steps.  4th graders were also working with fractions and showed great improvement with reading comprehension!  5th graders were absolutely silent during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time.  They are in the middle of reading a class novel together.  It was another busy week at ELS! Blessing Boxes - A Note from Mrs. Wilson We will continue with our “Blessing Box” drive for the next two weeks.  I’ve a few items thus far but I know we will fill them up before Thanksgiving Break.  Mrs. Wilson provided a list of some needed items.   Food Pantry “Wish List” for Thanksgiving :  Food:  Vienna Sausage, Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Saimin, Instant Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Canned Chili  Other Items: Shampoo, Baby Wipes, Diapers Size 3 & 4, Bar Soap  Our 2nd quarter Chapel Offerings (currently totaling $277.85) will always go to these organizations. Calendar Dates Monday–November 11th  - No School - Veterans Day - Thank you to all of our service men and women for their service! Sunday–November 17th  - Children’s Sunday - 9:00 AM - Grades K-2 - Keiki Chorus Friday - November 22nd  - 1:30 Dismissal - No E+ No Pre+ Monday–Friday - November 25-29  - No School - Thanksgiving Break Friday–December 13th  - 1:30 Dismissal - No E+ No Pre+ 6:00 PM - Christmas Concert - St. Anthony Christmas Break Child Care There are 6 dates open for camp sign up.  December 23, 26, 27, 30 and January 2 and 3. • 3rd Grade Field Trip!

The 3rd grade is attending a field trip on Friday, November 8th 2024. We are asking you to drop your child off at the Maui Ocean Center instead of ELS this morning. Your child will bring all their school supplies (i.e. backpack, lunch, water, red folder) with them to the Ocean Center. We will have a designated area to store their backpacks during the duration of our stay. Please have your child leave any important/valuable items at home as their bags won’t be in a locked location. We will be having an early lunch at the Ocean Center. Please pack a lunch for your child. This can be a disposable lunch or their lunch box. Your child will be responsible for getting their belongings back to ELS. Your child will not have access to the food or gift shops at the Ocean Center. Please do not send them with money for these features. At 11:15 am, we will be bussing back to ELS. You will pick up your child at ELS as normal at 2:45 pm (or E+). Please send $5 with your child prior to the field trip to cover the cost of the bus. Please have your child wear their red uniform t-shirt this day. November 1st, 2024 Happy All Saints Day!   It is also the day after Halloween and I am sure you can imagine the excitement that was felt this week.  Here at ELS we also took time this week to talk about something else  that took place on October 31st over 500 years ago.  This was a pretty significant day in History as well.  The Reformation is a good reminder of what we believe as Christians.  We are truly saved by Grace, through faith.  The words of Ephesians 2:8-9 were voiced by the Kindergarteners at Chapel this week.  “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast".  In preschool this week, I saw some classes enjoying PE time with Ms. Jordynn.  I stopped in during “Jesus Time” in Kindergarten.  They were talking about the Reformation and their memory verse was a great match.  1st graders were working on consonant blends that come at the end of words.  2nd graders had the “Favorites” week.  Each day had a different theme.  3rd graders and 7th graders were both working on their Language Arts 5-a-day lesson.  4th graders continued with their class novel.  5th graders were working up a sweat during PE.  Their afternoon class was a hot one!  6th graders learned about Rolf Rewards.  Mrs. Rolf brought a clever new ticket system to class.  8th graders learned all about the rules of exponents. PUMPKIN FEST Pumpkin Fest 2024 was another successful community event.  Thank you to all of our volunteers!  Thank you to all of our sponsors!  Thank you for all of the donations!   We competed with a few other events going on last Friday but still had a great turnout!  Lots of local vendors (both food and crafts) were able to make a little money.  The band and athletics programs will benefit from proceeds raised.  The travel team raised money for their next trip.  We will allow each station/vendor to keep their proceeds.  This event truly benefits the community at ELS and the greater Maui Community as well.  Funds (around $8000) not designated to a specific vendor or group will be distributed for needed campus items (New AC units, fencing, Basketball hoop, classroom items).  Thank you again for another great Pumpkin Fest! Blessing Boxes - A Note from Mrs. Wilson Since 1991, the ELS children have participated in our annual “Blessing Box” project.  We collect Christmas gifts for less fortunate children in Maui County and food for the Wailuku Union Food Pantry. The Christmas gifts are given to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center  and are distributed through this organization.  The  Friends of the Children’s Justice Center  is a private, non-profit group that supports children who have been traumatized by abuse and severe neglect in Maui County.  Last year, they supplied Christmas gifts to over 2,000 children!  The need is even greater this year.  The FCJC has done much to support displaced children from the fires on Maui.  We are asking our students to help bring the spirit of Christmas to those children who need it most.   Also, the Wailuku Union Food Pantry has had a tremendous increase in the number of people with food insecurity due to the fires on Maui. The Wailuku Union Food Pantry has strict guidelines and rules they follow to ensure the food is distributed fairly. They are a worthy organization in need of donations. There will be two blessing boxes located in the back of each classroom for the first three weeks in November. One box will be for Christmas gifts. The other box will be for canned food, cereal, rice, soups, noodles, peanut butter or any non-perishable food. Wouldn’t it be great if each student brought just one Christmas gift?  Think of the possibilities if each student brought two or three gifts!!   Please do not wrap your NEW gifts.  The last day to bring gifts and food is November 22nd. Our Chapel Offerings (currently totaling $211.22) will always go to these organizations. Calendar Dates Saturday - November 2nd - Middle School Volleyball Tournament - Seabury Hall - 8:00 AM Monday–November 11th  - No School - Veterans Day Sunday–November 17th  - Children’s Sunday - 9:00 AM - Grades K-2 - Keiki Chorus Friday - November 22nd - 1:30 Dismissal - No E+ No Pre+ Monday–Friday - November 25-29  - No School - Thanksgiving Break Friday–December 13th 1:30 Dismissal - No E+ No Pre+         6:00 PM - Christmas Concert - St. Anthony's Christmas Break Child Care Christmas and New Years Day both fall on Wednesday this year.  With these midweek holidays it makes child care over break a little disjointed.  We would like to offer this to you but we first need to determine if there is enough need.  Dates to consider will be December 22,26,27 (Week 1) and December 30, January 2,3 (Week 2).  Please use this survey and give Mrs. Davenport the information she needs to plan for Christmas Break Child Care. I can’t believe it’s already November! Blessings on your weekend! Mr. Rempfer
